It seems like a positive pregnancy test should be all you need to determine your next steps when discovering an unplanned pregnancy. Actually, there is much more to know, and an ultrasound is the best way to get the information you need.
What Is An Ultrasound?
Ultrasound is an imaging method that uses sound waves to produce images of the inside of your body. Most ultrasound examinations use an ultrasound device outside your body, though some involve placing a small device inside.
Our sonographer performs our no-cost limited OB ultrasounds by placing a gel on the outside of your abdomen. The sonographer then rubs a wand-like instrument called a transducer through the gel, which picks up the sound waves and translates them into images.
What Information Does Ultrasound Give Me?
There are three critical questions that ultrasound answers.
1. How far along am I?
An ultrasound accurately determines the gestational age of your pregnancy. Our sonographer can tell how many weeks you have been pregnant by taking measurements of the fetus.
2. Is my pregnancy viable?
A viable pregnancy is growing with a detectable heartbeat. If our sonographer cannot detect a heartbeat, it is either too early in your pregnancy, or you have already miscarried.
3. Where is my pregnancy located?
Some pregnancies form on the outside of the uterus. This is known as an ectopic pregnancy. They are extremely dangerous and could even be fatal.
