If you’ve recently had sex and are noticing symptoms like nausea or a missed period, it’s a good idea to take a pregnancy test.
For the most accurate result, wait at least one week after your missed period before testing. If you don’t track your cycle or it’s irregular, try testing about three weeks after unprotected sex. If your test is negative but your period still hasn’t started, wait another week and test again.
We offer no-cost pregnancy testing at You Medical. Schedule an appointment with us today to get started.
What Will I Feel Like If I’m Pregnant?
Not everyone has the same pregnancy symptoms. Some women don’t notice anything at all until they miss a period.
Early pregnancy can also feel a lot like PMS. Things like bloating, moodiness, being really tired, or sore breasts can happen with both, since they’re all tied to hormone changes. Because of that, it’s easy to think your period is about to start when it’s actually an early pregnancy.
Some other early signs include frequent urination, food aversions, or increased sensitivity to smells.
How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?
About 6–12 days after conception, the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine wall and begins forming the placenta. As this happens, your body starts producing a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin), which supports the pregnancy.
This hormone begins to show up in your blood and urine, with levels usually doubling every 2–3 days early on. Pregnancy tests include a reactive strip that detects hCG in your body, resulting in a positive result if the hormone is present.
