How Does the Test Work?

If you become pregnant after sex, the fertilized egg implants in the lining of your uterus. When the fertilized egg attaches, your body produces a hormone called hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin).

The hCG hormone builds over time and eventually enters your urine and bloodstream. If our pregnancy test detects hCG in your urine, it indicates the possibility of pregnancy, and the test result is positive.

When Should I Take a Test?

If your period is like clockwork (every 28-32 days), you can take the test a day or two after your missed period. If your monthly cycle is irregular, waiting until five or six days after it should have started is best. 

Your body needs enough time to register the hCG in your urine before the pregnancy test can detect it.

Can I Take a Home Pregnancy Test?

Over-the-counter pregnancy tests are reliable, but only if you follow the directions carefully. Here are the steps to take:

• Check the expiration date to ensure it hasn’t expired.
• Read the instructions thoroughly before beginning.
• Wait until a day or two after your missed period to test.
• Take the test first thing in the morning when your urine is the most concentrated.
• Wait the recommended amount of time before viewing the result.
• Retest in another 3 to 5 days to confirm the results.

The Test is Positive. Now What?

Believe it or not, a false-positive test result is possible. Experts estimate that as many as 26% of all pregnancies end in a miscarriage. Because it takes a woman’s body time to return to pre-pregnancy hormone levels, you could get a positive pregnancy test result and no longer be pregnant.
